Events were scheduled throughout the week but the programme for Proclamation Day on Saturday May 28th included: a procession down Main Road, the Proclamation Ceremony at Maidstone Park at which His Excellency the Governor General Brigadier Sir Bernard Fergusson presented the Proclamation of the City to His Worship the Mayor P.H. Kinsman, and the release of 1,000 pigeons.
The celebrations in the afternoon included a Mardi Gras in Russell Street from 1.30-5pm and a fireworks display at Maidstone Park.
