Photographer UnknownDescriptionThis narrow mill was used to break down partly-cured rubber; the ratio of roll speeds was higher than usual, and at least one roll was grooved. A piece of rubber was fed in by the sloping conveyor, and passed through the rolls onto the lower conveyor, which spat it out.

John Childs is bending to work the mill; like all mills, it was fitted with 'Lund' safety gear; the bar above his head would stop the line abruptly if pushed; but here it is far too high; in principle the bar should be at chest height with the operator working above it.
