DescriptionVisit of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh, Summer 1953-1954. The Queen and Duke are being driven in an open top Daimler.

Crowds line the street, waving Union Jack flags (no New Zealand flags are visible). People are standing on a temporary dais on the front of the Council Chamber.

Also included in the picture is the old Gospel Hall, which was built in 1913. By mid-1955 a new Gospel Hall was in use; the old hall had burnt down.
