Photographer UnknownDescriptionScrap uncured rubber such as unused tread extrusion was thrown onto the short sloping belt conveyor, and dropped between the mill’s two rolls; it was forced down between them onto a second conveyor which returned the rubber in a thinner sheet to the front, where the operator is rolling it up. This mill was the first in a line of four; the others had 22-inch- (56 cm-) by 60 inch- (152 cm-) wide rollers, and fed the tread line; the 300 horsepower (225 kW) motor was eventually replaced by a 500 (373 kW) one.
At this level the mill could be dangerous.
The mill is shown in its original position, probably shortly before the whole line was raised 17 inches (43 cm), as a trip bar for operating an emergency stop is visible at top. An operator would be expected to always reach over it, and must not be able to reach a point where he could be dragged between rolls, without automatically triggering a stop.
