Photographer UnknownDescriptionThe building at top left was the Dunlop raw-material store; this area is to the south.
Much of the stuff visible is junk.
The black boxes with plastic covering their tops are carbon-black containes made by Brugger in Wainuomata; they were sent to Australia folded flat, and returned full of carbon black; the bottom panels, when unlatched, formed a discharge funnel.
The cost of shipping them back was a problem; when Reidrubber closed in 1983, Dunlop acquired their 'Taunton' machine which slit paper sacks and fed their contents into bulk containers; the Brugger system was abandoned.
Dunlop made steel containers similar in size to the Bruggers and filled them from paper sacks; when the machine proved unreliable, they imported carbon in disposable cloth bags of similar size, and hung them in steel frames when the contents were to be discharged.Date takenPre-1986ThemeDunlop Tyre Factory
