THE MOREL STREETSCAPE
This photograph relates to "the Morel Streetscape", which is a unique panoramic series of pictures taken by photographer Leo Morel that systematically documents both sides of Main Street, Upper Hutt. While there is no information recorded as to when these pictures were taken, the Archives believes the date to be January 1948, possibly New Years Day. More about Leo Morel and the reasoning behind our dating of these photos can be viewed by clicking the 'Leo Morel' links above or below.
While the particular photograph shown here is not itself part of Morel's panoramic sequences of either side of Main Street, it does appear to have been taken at the same time as the streetscape. Evidence for this includes the fact that some of the cars that appear in the panoramic sequence can also be seen here parked in the same place.
The following unattributed notes attached to this photo provide the following car-related information (note that the 1948 dates provided here conflict to some extent with our belief that the photograph was shot on the first day of that year).
"Cars: first parked on left is a 1938 Austin 10, second on left is a 1937 Standard 12, taxi on right by Caltex sign is a 1948 Ford V8 sedan, bought new by Len Tidswell who started 'Blue Light Taxis' with Tangy Seiley in 1948."
Googling American cars 1945-1948 shows none with the small bulging boot visible; most sedans are fastbacks; the '1948 Ford' is probably a pre-war car. Date takenJan. 1948
