Behind this frontage were the premises of R.C.H. Askew & Co. Ltd. Wood and Coal Merchants, entrance visible on left. The house visible at extreme left belonged to Mr Askew.

The tower structure visible between the Gospel Hall and the Federated Farmers building, several sections back, was a signal box where train drivers would collect a tablet for going over the Rimutaka Summit; only one train at a time could have the tablet.Date takenJan. 1948
