DescriptionMoving into the new Upper Hutt Public Library premises in Main Street; September 1956.

At the library's first premises above the Red Robin Milk Bar, 50 fourth-form boys from Heretaunga College spent a Friday morning passing 7000 books downstairs between 8:30 and 11:30; the books were packed into beer crates and trucked to the new premises at the other end of Main Street, where women volunteers and more boys unloaded the books and placed them on the new shelves; the shelves from the former premises followed the next day.

The official opening by the mayor, Mr R.H.E. Slacke, was on the evening of Tuesday September 25, 1956; the 'Leader' report of September 27 cited the architect as J I Craig, and builder as R Triplow; an adjacent article stated that a rail would be erected to protect the plate glass from cycles.
